Mr Shahid Farid was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in General Surgery with specific expertise in all aspects of Liver, Gallbladder and Transplantation Surgery at St James's University Hospital in 2018. He specialises in gallbladder surgery for gallstone disease and liver surgery including liver resection and transplantation for benign and cancerous conditions.

He provides a wide range of general surgical expertise in abdominal and groin hernia surgery and has a special interest in redo hernia surgery and in complex patients including the immunosuppressed, those with obesity, and patients with kidney and liver disease.

He performs a high volume of gallbladder, liver and general, and complex hepatobiliary surgery, and provides a regional service for hospitals across Yorkshire for the cases that require senior input. He is currently engaged in national initiatives to improve patient safety and quality in gallbladder surgery.

He routinely performs liver resection (open and laparoscopic) and liver transplantation in his main NHS practice, provides second opinions for complex liver and biliary disease, and acts as an expert witness for medico-legal matters.

Mr Farid graduated from the Universities of St Andrews and Manchester and completed surgical training in the East Midlands and Leeds. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and textbooks, and presents nationally and internationally on a regular basis.

Mr Farid is Director of Clarity Health Consultancy, providing strategic direction to industry in developing med-tech platforms in the NHS. He is passionate about medical education and is committed to shaping the future of surgical practice in liver and gallbladder surgery in the UK.
